Acts 1:12-26 Reading Notes

Dave Miers   -

In Acts 1:8, the Risen King says: “…you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

No backup plan. No retreat. Just ordinary people, empowered by the Spirit, sent with good news. This isn’t just their story. It’s ours. The Ascended Jesus is still at work, by his Spirit, through his people, in his world.

These short reading notes are designed to accompany our BURN YOUR BOATS teaching series in the Book of Acts.

Day 1: Acts 1:12–14

After Jesus ascended, the disciples gathered in the upper room—still reeling from the cross, thrilled by the resurrection, unsure what came next. They didn’t rush ahead or scatter. They prayed. Together. United. Expectant.

How can you slow down this week and commit something to prayer with others?

Day 2: Acts 1:15–26

Even the betrayal of Judas didn’t shake their trust in God. They turned to Scripture, named the pain, and moved forward with confidence. God’s plan hadn’t failed. His mission continued.

Praise God that he faithfully keeps every promise that he makes.

Day 3: Acts 1:21–22

To replace Judas, the apostles chose someone who had walked with Jesus and could witness to His resurrection. The mission wasn’t to innovate—it was to proclaim what they had seen.

Give thanks that Jesus appeared to his disciples and many others after rising from the dead.

Day 4: Acts 1:3; 1:22; 2:23–24, 31–32; 3:13–16, 26; 4:2, 10, 33

The resurrection pulses through Acts (the above references are just from the first few chapters, there’s more!) It’s the anchor of Christian hope and the fuel for Christian witness. Jesus lives—and that truth changed everything for the early church.

Ask God to deepen your confidence in the resurrection and open a door for you to speak about it.

Day 5: 1 Corinthians 15:12–20

If Jesus hasn’t been raised, we’ve got nothing. But he has—and that changes everything. His resurrection is our assurance, our hope, our future.

Thank God that your faith is not in vain. How will you live in light of resurrection today?

VISION PRAYER

Father God, by your grace, enable our church to be a city of refuge within the city of Brisbane. Empower me this week, by your Spirit, to offer one person the refuge, security, and hope found in Christ Jesus. Amen.
